Four projects won Mozilla’s call to fight bias and broaden inclusion in voice technology

After a thorough review of all submitted essays, the selecting panel has announced the top three winning essays, bagging cash prizes of USD $400, $250, and $100 respectively.

The essays will be used to help expand Mozilla’s Common Voice Kiswahili open-source data set, enabling the inclusion of local African languages in tech use and development.

What would it look like to have an abundance of diversity of human languages brought to life in an interactive virtual environment?

In April, Mozilla’s Common Voice and Hekaya Arts initiative asked Kiswahili literature lovers to write essays inspired by culture, heritage, and social justice themes. The result; 33 entries of creative writing pieces in both fiction and non-fiction categories in Tanzania, Kenya, and Burundi.

Celebrating International Mother Languages Day at Mozilla Common Voice

Next week, students from Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences and University of Groningen will record and validate as many hours of Dutch and Frisian audio as possible between Friday, January 15th 2021 and Friday, January 22nd 2021 on Common Voice. The goal of this weeklong contribute-a-thon is to increase participation for Dutch and Frisian, two languages that are typically underrepresented in voice databases.
