This special issue of Personal & Ubiquitous Computing explores the diverse narratives and origins of ubiquitous computing (ubicomp) and how these origins influence its future. The articles within reflect a variety of perspectives from fields such as computer science, informatics, history of science, science and technology studies (STS), design, and urban planning. Ubicomp, since Mark Weiser's seminal 1991 article, has evolved from lab experiments to a prominent area of research and practice, influencing fields like the Internet of Things (IoT), smart cities, and mobile computing.
