Meta: Help Users Stop Accidentally Sharing Private AI Conversations

Updated: June 12, 2025

Meta recently launched its own AI app, like ChatGPT. The Meta AI app comes with a “Discover Feed” — a public stream of real user AI conversations posted by users. Meta says that users know that they're sharing their AI conversations publicly. But a number of posts suggest otherwise. You can find posts that appear to show users' personal data, medical issues, work problems, and calendar reminders in the Discover Feed.¹

Meta AI's app doesn’t make it obvious that what you share goes fully public. There’s no clear iconography, no familiar cues about sharing like in other Meta apps, and no intuitive user interface clues that clearly explain you're about to publish your private AI conversation to a global audience.

That’s why Mozilla is calling on Meta to fix the app’s design, and put users in control of their privacy.

We launched this petition because we were concerned that private chats were being made public without people realizing it. More than 10,000 people signed, and Meta reached out to hear about your concerns. Here’s what now we’re asking Meta to improve in its AI app:

  1. Add clear visual indicators to make it unmistakable when a prompt and response are being made public.
  2. Clarify sharing through better text prompts and a revised user experience, including at the moment of sharing and anywhere shared content appears. The goal is education and awareness, not just consent buried in unclear buttons.
  3. Use familiar platform conventions, like the standard phone share sheet, to ensure users understand they’re posting to a public space.
  4. Notify users who have shared content publicly, and provide details about how they can permanently delete any unintentionally shared content.

The Meta AI app's user interface is leading people to unintentionally and unknowingly make their private conversations public. At Mozilla Foundation, we believe this can be fixed — through design, education, and clarity. If you agree, add your name to demand Meta improve its AI app to ensure public sharing is a truly informed choice.
