2020 Collaborative Roadmap to Trustworthy AI

In 2019, Mozilla set out to grow momentum around building, defending, and demanding trustworthy AI as part of a broader movement for a healthier internet. This document is a roadmap of the trustworthy AI work our partner organizations and fellows are driving in 2020 overlaid on the theory of change Mozilla has designed. This is meant to help identify opportunities for further collaboration, note which organizations are driving which initiatives, and to surface space where partner organizations may not be focused. Among those we collaborate with are our Fellowship host organization partners:

This document is a roadmap of the trustworthy AI work our partner organizations and fellows are driving in 2020 overlaid on the theory of change Mozilla has designed. This is a living document, and information may be updated during the course of 2020 and beyond.

Understanding the Roadmap

This roadmap focuses on medium-term outcomes, short-term outcomes, and high-level activities, 3 successive layers of the theory of change that Mozilla is focused on in 2020. The initiatives that partner organizations drive are categorized within the corresponding short-term outcome.

The column outlining threats to the short- and medium-term outcomes are more of a thought-exercise, and are not necessarily based in reality. They are meant to provoke all of us to think about what might be happening outside of our work, within the sociopolitical context and industry/business context. Threats are different from challenges, as these are external factors we have little to no control over, while challenges are difficulties we must overcome.

At the far right is a column for reflections and learning in 2020 -- this is to capture successes, changes, and challenges as the movement pushes forward next year. This is a living document, and information may be updated during the course of 2020 and beyond.

Table of contents by medium-term outcome:

  1. Developers increasingly build things using trustworthy AI guidelines and technologies.
  2. Trustworthy AI products and services are increasingly embraced by early adopters.
  3. Consumers choose trustworthy products when available and call for them when they aren’t.
  4. New and existing laws are used to make the AI ecosystem more trustworthy.

Next Steps

Every roadmap needs a timeline. The next step is to outline organizational priorities and see when in the year the initiatives might take place, so we can find opportunities for collaboration
